ABOUT WiLDAF GHANA AND OUR DIGITAL SAFETY WORK
WHO WE ARE
Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) Ghana is one of Ghana's leading national women's rights networks, established in 1991, registered in 1993 and dedicated to advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls across all 16 regions of Ghana.
With a diverse membership of over 372 institutions and individuals—including lawyers, traditional leaders, teachers, farmers, traders, youth networks, and community activists—we operate from our secretariat in Accra, using a rights-based approach and the power of law to promote gender equality and sustainable development.
OUR GIRLS EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME (GEP)
Our flagship Girls Empowerment Programme empowers adolescent girls (ages 10–17) and young women (18–24) through safe spaces including Girls Empowerment Clubs (GECs) and Boys for Change (B4C) Networks in schools and communities across Ghana.
WiLDAF Ghana's comprehensive approach—combining legal empowerment, digital safety, psychosocial support, and community engagement—ensures that girls and boys at risk or survivors of violence can access justice, protection, and skills for self-advocacy. Through innovative partnerships like our collaboration with Praesidio Safeguarding and responsive tools like CAJUD, we are creating safe, empowering environments for Ghana's next generation.
What We Do under our Girls Empowerment Programme:
🛡️ Promoting Positive Norms: We challenge harmful gender stereotypes and foster respect for girls' rights, focusing on themes such as Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
💪 Life Skills & Leadership Training: We enhance girls' agency, confidence, and advocacy capacity through structured training and peer-led activities.
🌐 Digital Safety Education: We provide specialized training on online safety, helping young people recognize cyber risks, prevent online violence, and navigate digital spaces securely.
🤝 Engaging Boys and Men: Through our Boys-for-Change Networks, boys learn about gender equality and positive masculinity, becoming allies in fighting gender-based violence.
OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH PRAESIDIO SAFEGUARDING
WiLDAF Ghana is proud to partner with Praesidio Safeguarding to strengthen online safety for Ghana's young people. This vital collaboration focuses on equipping adolescents, teachers, and parents with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital world safely.
What We're Building Together:
📚 Comprehensive Online Safety Curriculum: We have co-created an age-appropriate curriculum addressing online safety for three key audiences:
Adolescents: Understanding digital risks, protecting personal information, recognizing and responding to online abuse
Teachers: Identifying warning signs, creating safe digital learning environments, responding to incidents
Parents/Caregivers: Supporting children's healthy digital habits, monitoring without invading privacy, opening communication channels
🏫 School-Based Pilot Programme: We are currently piloting this curriculum in 3 select schools to test its effectiveness and gather feedback from students, teachers, and parents. Following the pilot phase, we will conduct a comprehensive assessment to measure impact and refine our approach.
🌐 This Digital Resource Hub: You're visiting the result of our collaboration! This website serves as an accessible, user-friendly reference platform where adolescents, teachers, and parents can:
Access curriculum materials and lesson plans
Find practical tips and resources for online safety
Learn about reporting pathways for online abuse
Connect with support services
📊 Teacher Safeguarding Training Needs Assessment: We are conducting a systematic assessment of safeguarding training needs among teachers in select basic schools. This research will inform targeted professional development and ensure educators are equipped to protect and support students both online and offline.
🎯 Integration into National Curriculum: Our goal is to have this online safety curriculum integrated into the Ghana Education Service (GES) national curriculum, ensuring that every child in Ghana receives essential digital safety education as part of their schooling.
