Online Scams & Fake Opportunities

What’s the risk?

Some children and teens are targeted with fake job offers, “easy money” schemes, or online requests that seem helpful at first. Others may be tempted or pressured to join scamming groups themselves, often believing it’s harmless or a fast way to support their family. These situations can lead to financial loss, legal trouble, or serious exploitation.

How to talk about it

Start with curiosity, not accusation. Ask what kinds of money-making offers they see online and what sounds believable to them. Talk openly about how scams often look too good to be true and how real opportunities don’t require secrecy or upfront payments. Reassure them they can always check with you before responding to messages or offers.
