Sexual Extortion

What’s the risk?

Sexual extortion happens when someone tricks or pressures a child into sharing sexual images or videos, then threatens to share them unless the child sends more images, money, or does what they ask. This often starts through social media, gaming platforms, or messaging apps, and the person may pretend to be a peer or a romantic partner.

How to talk about it

Explain that anyone can be tricked online—even smart, careful children. Make it clear that threats are a form of abuse and that the child is never to blame. Tell them that if anyone threatens them online, the most important thing to do is stop responding and tell a trusted adult immediately. Reassure them that your priority will be helping them stay safe, not punishing them.
