Grooming & Transactional Relationships
What’s the risk?
Some adults use money, gifts, data, or emotional support to build trust with children online or offline. This can slowly turn into pressure for sexual images, favours, or secrecy. Grooming often feels caring at first, which makes it hard for children to recognise danger.
How to talk about it
Explain that attention, gifts, or money should never come with conditions—especially secrecy. Let your child know that grooming is not their fault and that adults are responsible for setting boundaries. Use real-life examples (without graphic details) and repeat often that they won’t be punished for telling you if something feels uncomfortable.
